Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers of the Victorian era. Circa 1925. Winterhalder & Hofmeier’s logo, W&H Sch, is located on a round plate on the clock face. "Sch" refers to Schwarzenback, where W & H was founded.
This is a 9 tube tall case clock with an 8-day movement and plays the quarter hour tunes. On the upper right side of the dial is a chime selector with 3 choices: Westminster, Whittington, or Winchester. The upper left has a selector for chime or silent for the hour chime. Located on the right side of the face is a lever for chime or silent for the quarter hours. Access doors above the clock’s side glass are backed in original material. Inside the doors are the inner workings and, in this case, almost identical to those of Herschede clocks.
Stamped at the bottom of the back plate is M. Winterhalder & Hofmeier G.m.b.H, Neustadt, Baden, Germany, and the number 9464 is etched into the rear of the face plate. The clock has been recently serviced.
There is a plaque with an inscription that indicates this clock was presented as a retirement gift in 1932.
